How much clear road an overtake actually needs

You are behind a truck doing seventy, you can see three hundred metres of road, and there is a car coming the other way at the far end of it. The manoeuvre only works if your path and its path fit inside the same stretch. One slider sets your speed; the overlap on screen is exactly how much you are short.

The number that decides it is the difference, not the speed

Overtaking feels like a question of acceleration, and it is really a question of subtraction. Passing a truck that is only twenty km/h slower takes two or three times the road of passing one that is fifty km/h slower, and the oncoming car is eating the same seconds from the other end. If you cannot see the stretch the two bands need, the honest move is the one that looks like doing nothing.

What's inside

  1. 1 Everything that follows comes out of three numbers — The oncoming car is assumed to hold its speed. If it is also overtaking something, every number on this page gets worse.
  2. 2 You do not pass the truck at your speed, you pass it at the difference — The seventy metres is two safety gaps plus the length of the truck and of your car. Change any of those and the time changes with them.
  3. 3 During that time you are covering road at full speed — This band is your speed multiplied by the time to pass. Nothing about the road surface or the car enters into it.
  4. 4 The oncoming car is spending the same seconds coming towards you — Neither of you is doing anything wrong here. Two legal speeds and one shared piece of tarmac are enough on their own.
  5. 5 What you need is the two bands added together — At most legal speeds behind a slow truck, the required distance runs past the edge of this drawing. That is the answer, not a limit of the picture.
