Where electricity comes from

Pull one slider and follow the energy from a river all the way to a pump that lifts water back up.

Water pressure 50%

Tap a part of the diagram to open that step.

The whole chain

Water falls → rotation → magnetic field → electrons swinging → magnetic field again → rotation again → water rises. At every step energy never appears and never disappears, it only changes form.

What's inside

  1. 1 The river and the dam — Everything else follows the slider.
  2. 2 Turbine and shaft — Spin speed simply copies the water pressure.
  3. 3 Generator and electrons — Like the treadle of a foot-powered sewing machine: it only rocks in place, and the work still gets done.
  4. 4 Motor and pump — Drop the slider to zero and the water stops rising.
