The whole chain

Mutation → a marker unique to the tumour → an mRNA strand describing it → a lipid particle that delivers it → a dendritic cell that displays it → T cells that hunt by that shape. The vaccine carries no drug and no virus, only a description of the target.

What's inside

  1. 1 A tumour makes proteins nothing else has — Every tumour has its own set. This is why the vaccine is made for one patient and no one else.
  2. 2 The marker is written down as mRNA — One strand can encode several markers at once, so the tumour cannot escape by dropping just one.
  3. 3 The strand is wrapped in fat — The particle is the reason the vaccine has to be kept cold — the fat shell is fragile.
  4. 4 A dendritic cell reads it and shows the result — Nothing has attacked anything yet. This stage is training, not fighting.
  5. 5 T cells learn the shape and go looking — This is why the approach targets so precisely: the address is a protein that only the tumour makes.
